One of the greatest bands to ever come from Britain was The Smiths, they were formed in Manchester in 1982 and consisted of Morrissey on vocals, Johnny Marr on Guitar, Andy Rourke on bass and Mike Joyce on drums. Their music is still played to this day in bars, clubs and on the radio all around the world. They have been called the most important alternative rock band that ever came from the British music scene that essentially was the eighties. This was largely due to the fact that they were considered to be somewhat of outsiders as they began but they successfully became mainstream and in a relatively short period of time as well. And they did it on their own terms and without giving up who they really were. The NME even names them the “most influential artists ever” above even the Beatles.

Morrissey and Marr were the songwriting geniuses behind the band and with their combined talent they released four studio albums with the label Rough Trade Records. They were: The Smiths (1984), Meat is Murder (1985), The Queen is Dead (1986), and Strangeways, Here We Comes (1987). They have had multiple albums labelled among the list of the top albums of all time. They also had several compilations and singles reach the UK top 20 and all four of their albums reached the top 5 charts, one of which hit number one. They now have a large following but at the time they had a smaller cult following. The band split apart in 1987 due to internal difficulties and they have not reunited since, despite multiple offers.

They now have a huge following, despite the fact that they are no longer together. Despite their brief time as a band their music has influenced so many other bands and artists and their sound is so unique that their songs are immediately recognizable even today. Morrissey’s ability to write fantastic lyrics that related to the common man’s issues while still maintaining a sense of humour was what set them apart and made them so relatable to the common people. Marr carefully paired these lyrics with the ideal sound and as a band they created some of the greatest songs of all time, which is why they are so clearly awarded as so.

After their split they went on to pursue their own careers, Morrissey being perhaps the most successful of them all, but not without the dramatics. He is an advocate for animals rights as he is and has been for a long time a vegan, he is known to play animal abuse films at his concerts. He is also well known for not showing up or refusing to play if things are not just right. He does still tour regularly around the world and if you are able to see him he does put on a fantastic show, all be it dramatic.

For having such a short time together as a band they truly are one of the greatest bands of all time!
